A recent study has proved that certain junk foods contain good amounts of antioxidants and they can in fact be good for the heart. While it isn’t recommended that one thrive on these foods, indulging in some of them, in the limit, of course, may do you a whole lot of good.

Everyone craves junk food. Sometimes you go all in and eat a pint of ice cream, even when you know you shouldn’t. However, there are snacks and even fast-food meals that are less unhealthy than most options out there; you just have to know which to choose. Some examples of these junk foods are…

Popcorn

It may be the best accompaniment for movies, but popcorn also helps curb the evening snack craving. A bowl of homemade popcorn is even better as it is low on calories and high on antioxidants.

Tortilla Chips

Tortilla chips tend to have less fat and calories per ounce than potato chips. That includes Doritos, which have 140 calories and 8 grams of fat per serving. So next time you need a salty, crunchy snack, opt for the tortilla chips. (If you’re feeling ambitious, tortilla chips and other snacks can be made at home.)

Dark Chocolate Bars

Dark chocolate contains high amounts of antioxidants. It helps to lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of heart disease as well if you eat around 100 grams a day.

Crackers

There are many kinds of whole wheat crackers available, which can be a good and healthy evening munch without the side effects that other junk foods cause.

Burger

Burgers loaded with special sauce and layers of cheese sandwiched between a giant bun aren’t exactly the model for a wholesome, nutritious meal — especially when it comes from a fast-food chain.

But, burgers don’t have to be completely off-limits when you’re trying to eat right. In fact, when incorporated into a healthy, varied diet, research shows red meat can be a great source of high-quality protein and essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. And poultry, including chicken and turkey, can be an excellent source of highly digestible proteins, B vitamins, iron, zinc, and copper.

Baked Snacks

The latest in the snack category is baked snacks. They are better than fried chips as they contain no oil. Usually made of whole wheat with a dash of spice, it not only entertains the taste buds but is also healthy for your body.

Processes Cheese

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is found in many meats, milk, and cheese products. But a recent study that concentrated specifically on processed cheese found that CLA has anti-carcinogenic properties and it is also an effective antioxidant. The study says processed cheese contains more CLA than natural cheese, such as cheddar.

Dry Stout Beer

Experts say that one pint of this thick and creamy dark beer may be as effective as a low dose of aspirin to improve blood circulation and hence lower the risk of blood clots and heart attacks. It’s proven to be better than aerated drinks and other types of beer.

Red Wine

Resveratrol, an ingredient in red wine, effectively decreases life-threatening inflammations. The antioxidants in red wine can help in preventing heart disease and cancer. For non-drinkers, grape juice or even red grapes can be as effective.

Pork Rinds

Yes, pork rinds are deep-fried, but compared to potato chips, they’re practically healthy food, depending on your dietary needs. There are little to no carbohydrates in them, and they’re full of protein.

Pretzels

Crunchy pretzels are well-known for being low-fat, salty snacks. There are many flavored versions to choose from now, like honey-mustard or spicy buffalo wings, which run about 140 calories per serving, depending on the variety.

Sweet Potato Fries

If there’s an option to choose sweet potato in place of regular white potato, always go for it, especially in french fries. You’ll likely get just as many carbs and calories, but sweet potatoes have more fiber and a massive amount of vitamin A.

Cheese

Snacking on an ounce or two of cheese will give you a boost of calcium and protein. A little bit of hard, aged cheese like sharp cheddar or Parmesan will go a long way. Pair cheese with fruit or nuts for extra vitamins.
