Omicron is 3 times more contagious than delta: research

South African scientists have published a preliminary study on the Coronavirus Omicron type. Compared to delta and beta types, omicron is three times more likely to re-infect.In addition, Omicron can destroy the immune system that formed in the body of the person who was affected by Corona in the past. The new study is based on data collected by the South African health department, the AFP news agency reported. This research paper has been published online. However, its review has not been completed yet.

As of November 26, 2.7 million people in South Africa have been infected with corona. It is suspected that 35,060 of them have been re-infected. If the corona test results are positive within 90 days of infection, the virus is thought to have re-infected.

Juliet Pulium, director of the South African DSI-NRF Center of Excellence in Epidemiological Modeling and Analysis, talks about the new study. In a tweet, he wrote that many of those infected in the first three waves of the corona in South Africa had the virus in their bodies again. Most of them have been affected by Delta type before.

Juliet Pulium warned that it was not possible to add to the study whether newly infected patients had been vaccinated. As a result, it is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. Researchers say there are plans to do more research on the effectiveness of the vaccine.

Juliet said that in addition to this, information is needed on an urgent basis to know the seriousness of the physical complications caused by the infection of the amygdala.

Michael Head, a scientist at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, described the South African study as “high quality”. He said that what has come up in the research is very worrying.

By mid-November this year, an average of 300 people a day were infected with a corona in South Africa. A few days later, the news of the identification of Omicron matched in the country. Since then, the rate of infection has skyrocketed in the country. Last Wednesday, 6,581 people in South Africa became infected with the corona. The day before, 4,373 people were identified as Corona. And last Monday, the presence of corona matched the bodies of 2,263 people.
